The algae vessel network, which grows and harvests algae for research and biofuel extraction, covers the entire bridge. The proposed wall system is built with a porous material that is able to contain moisture, similar to a sponge. Mosses will inhabit the walls and create layers of “breathing” insulation that serves multiple purposes, such as improving air quality, noise reduction, and so on. The two systems combine to form a coherent living bridge that cleanses air, produces biofuel energy, and provide its own microclimate to people within the system.
The algae and people are treated equally in the bridge: The singular entities act as particles that “float” within the vessels, and various opportunities within the bridge allow the particles to conjoin and interact with each other, to form clusters or cultures. The visual sense of being immersed within the algae from the human’s perspective also provides an additional layer of experience.
The bridge is choreographed as an extension of the island that connects with the main land. It aims to serve as a carrier for biomass to inhabit and grow, and serve as a base for forming an ever-growing ecosystem. The bridge intends to make people more aware of the environment they’re within, and preserve the six mile island as an urban oasis.
